Careers at GRAND: Manager, Technology Transfer & Commercialization (BC and Alberta Region)

The GRAND Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) is a 5-year, $23M network supporting academic research at 24 universities across Canada exploring graphics, animation and new media. Its operations are headquartered at the Great Northern Way Campus (GNWC) in Vancouver, BC.  GRAND has a mandate to foster innovative research and to help Canadian companies exploit that research.

GRAND is seeking a commercialization manager who will be responsible for rolling-out a newly developed commercialization program for the GRAND network. The commercialization manager will take ownership of the program and ensure it delivers real results to Canadian companies. 

Duties include:

  • Startup of the commercialization program and continual refinement to meet program objectives
  • Development of an outreach program to communicate research results and opportunities to technology companies in western Canada
  • Management of a technology transfer program based around small scale prototyping projects with industry/academic partners
  • Working with local stakeholders to help prepare research projects as new ventures via spin-out/startup approaches


The position reports to the Director, Operations, of GRAND NCE, is based at GNWC and will initially be for a 2 year period. Initial activities will focus on BC, then expand to Alberta. Some travel is required.

The job will suit either a technologist with a passion for seeing new technology transferred to and used by companies, or a business-focused individual who excels at business development that leverages technology advances. In either case the preferred candidate will have experience running small but complex programs, will be comfortable setting directions and goals and then delivering measurable results against those goals and will have a passion for helping companies solve problems and grow through exploitation of advanced technology. Specific skills and experience that would benefit the applicant include:

Familiarity with high tech companies, especially SMEs - how they operate and their constraints.
Understanding of academic research, its constraints and the academic technology/knowledge transfer process* Exposure to startups and SMEs, preferable by working at or starting one

  • Business planning and business development skills and experience
  • Experience of, or interest in the GRAND core research areas:  graphics, animation and new media
  • The ability to communicate and operate effectively at senior management levels
  • Grant writing and fund raising for technology-oriented organizations.


Salary is commensurate with experience. It is expected to start between $60,000 and $70,000 per annum and to be reassessed annually.
