GRAND Café is an student and postdoc-driven regional event where GRAND students and postdocs have an opportunity to meet up, network and learn more about each other and each other’s GRAND projects. Typically, a GRAND Café is a day event (approx. 9am-5pm) held on campus at one of GRAND’s member universities. A facility/lab tour could be considered as part of the event.

Subject to approval, GRAND Central would cover the event catering costs (for example, breakfast and lunch).
Further, should a student or postdoc already be in the city where the Café is being held, GRAND Central would consider, subject to approval, covering one extra night of accommodation (up to $200) in order for that person to attend the event.
There is a limited yearly GRAND Café budget which will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.
To apply to host a GRAND Café, please email [email protected] with details of your event including: date, time, location, agenda, budget request, name of lead organizer(s), name of supervisor, university name. Please include the full name of your Café in the subject line.
For best consideration, it is recommended that applications to host a Café are submitted at least two months prior to the event.
For consistency’s sake, GRAND Café’s naming standard is as follows: GRAND Café @ <insert university here><insert specific descriptor of campus, if applicable>.

To apply for an accommodation subsidy, send an email to [email protected] for accommodation funding. In the email include your name, position, name of supervisor, university name, name and date of the GRAND Café you are attending. Please include the full name of the Café in the subject line.
Subsidies are applicable to GRAND students and postdocs attending a GRAND Café.
Accommodation costs will be reimbursed up to $200 per night, for up to one (1) night. Accommodation is applicable only to those who live out of town or to those who are already in the city where the Café is being held. The one (1) night hotel accommodation subsidy is ideally based on double occupancy (i.e., two (2) students / postdocs per room), where possible.
No other accommodation expenses will be reimbursed through GRAND Central.
In some cases, accommodation expenses will exceed the subsidized amount. In such cases, please submit the receipt so it can be site-stamped for the amount reimbursed through GRAND and returned to you so the balance can be reimbursed through accounts at your home institution. Students and postdocs should consult their supervisors.
Expenses related to local travel (e.g., to and from the airport at either end of the journey), meals (over and above those provided at the event) and flight change fees are NOT reimbursed through GRAND Central. These expenses may be eligible charges against GRAND research accounts. Students and postdocs should consult their supervisors.
Please submit your Expense Claim Form no later than one month after the date of the GRAND Café.
