New Interactions Around HD Video

Modern HD video systems present opportunities for the design of new interactions around media. They have significant surplus storage capacity; they support BD-J, a specification of the Java ME XLets standard that allows disks to include software that creates dynamic behaviors; and they have network connectivity so devices can interact with each other remotely. Several gaps in previous video research require ethnographic studies to understand the unique nature of digital video and its impact on the viewing experience. 

The methodology will focus on artifacts gathered from participatory design exercises and cultural probes obtained using new applications that overlay the video viewing experience or enhance the value of content ownership. 

HDVID will conduct case studies and develop prototypes designed to understand and enhance consumers’ use of digital video appliances.
