Biography

Jonathan Schaeffer is Professor of Computer Science at University of Alberta. He is the iCORE Chair in High-performance Artificial Intelligence Systems (2001-2011) and a Distinguished University Professor. He has developed and applied innovative artificial intelligence techniques in games-related research for over 30 years. He authored the checkers program Chinook, the first computer program to win a human world championship in any game. In 2007 he announced that he had solved the game, a result that was ranked as one of the top-10 breakthroughs for the year 2008 by the journals Science and Nature. He has also worked on technology that can be applied to games of imperfect information, such as poker. The poker software has been successfully commercialized in Poker Academy. He works with commercial games companies on next-generation artificial intelligence technology. The results from his research group have shipped in three commercial games. He is a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, co-founder of WestGrid and Compute Canada, and a former NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Fellow.
